On The Ground

What we’re thinking about this week

Last week, Sean Duffy, Co-founder and CEO of Omada Health, made the announcement that he will be transitioning out of the CEO seat and passing the baton to Wei-Li Shao, Omada’s current President. Sean wrote a heart-felt, and important, letter sharing the news, and we can’t help but reflect right alongside him on all that has transpired in those fifteen years. How nascent digital health was back then, how many twists and turns happened on a macro level, not to mention the countless stories that will never be told about what it took to build up a company that has become a household name.

From our perspective, it made us reflect on how difficult it must have been to make that decision, yet how very lucky to be able to do so. While few will know all the ins-and-outs, there are not many CEOs (in all of innovation, let alone digital health) who get to take a company from founding to IPO. Fewer still get a say in when they might transition to an Executive Chair role. And even fewer get to leave a trail of positivity and impact behind them - just look at the comments on Sean’s LinkedIn announcement.

These decisions are never easy. Sometimes they’re made under duress. Sometimes they’re made when a CEO is given an impossible goal that can’t be reached. Sometimes they’re natural progressions of a company. And sometimes, it’s just the right time. What we hope for every founder, entrepreneur, and CEO, is that this decision is made with careful consideration, conversations, respect for what was built, and excitement for what is to come.
