On The Ground

What we’re thinking about this week

When you're contemplating your next leadership opportunity, "networking" isn’t just a single strategy, it’s the most important one.

At this level, most roles are filled before they ever hit a job board, and are unlikely to have been shared publicly to begin with. CEOs, execs, and Boards usually look to their networks first - searches often start with referrals, trusted peers, and quiet conversations.

The network you have built for yourself over years of diverse experiences includes those you’ve worked with, crossed paths with at conferences, classmates, and those who advised or invested in your company. Nurturing that network authentically, and perhaps most importantly when you don't need it, is a critical factor in smooth career transitions. These are the people who can vouch for you, who know how to think about you in the context of a growing company, and understand where you'll be successful. Hiring into high-growth organizations can be risky if someone doesn’t work out, so networking with those who know you is not just about your qualifications, but rather about your reputation, others’ experience in collaborating with you, and the vouch that you can handle ambiguity and scale.

The hidden truth is that oftentimes, roles don’t even have to be formalized before a hire is made and timing can be everything. Having and building relationships across the spectrum with CEOs, Investors, in-house talent at portcos and at the fund level, alongside trusted executive search firms, provides great coverage across all the open opportunities circulating at any given time.

Yes, it can feel like you’re “asking for a job," but in reality, you’re just staying in the flow. You’re selecting the kinds of problems you want to solve and the people you want to work with while making sure the people in your network know it too. We spend most of our time working - you deserve to do the things you want to do.
