On The Ground
Sometimes companies need composite roles - effectively someone who can pull double-duty in a role that might ordinarily be done by two people. Folks who have exactly 50/50 experience in both sales and marketing, or product and technology, or finance and accounting, or HR and talent acquisition (list goes on…) are rare. Usually, an executive will come up one particular track and then acquire experience in the other. We call that “major” and “minor”.
Calibrating and figuring out exactly what you need isn’t always clear. And instead of continuously changing your mind, here’s a quick framework to help you get started:
Find the “North Star” first:
- What needs to happen in X timeframe in order for us to feel happy with our initiative’s success? (the answer here can be revenue, contracts, engagement metrics - make it measurable and achievable)
As it relates to our North Star,
- what are our 3 biggest challenges? (ie what are we most concerned about?)
- what are our 3 biggest strengths? (ie what are we most confident about?)
- what are our 3 biggest opportunities? (ie what are we most excited to capture?)
After running through this, you’ll probably spot some patterns on where the needs are most urgent. Next step is to talk to a couple of executives who fit each persona to gut-check. Then make your decision, tell your network who you’re looking for, and get to hiring!
